The Strategic and Cultural Transformation of Risk, Technology, and the Financial Management Workforce on the Path to Audit Success
Spring Issue Overview
The Spring 2026 edition of the Armed Forces Comptroller Journal (Volume 71, Number 2) focuses on one of the most significant priorities shaping the defense financial management community today: achieving a clean audit opinion across the Department of Defense by 2028.
This issue explores how audit readiness is evolving from a compliance requirement into a mission-critical function that directly supports warfighter effectiveness, operational readiness, and public trust. Through perspectives from government leaders, industry experts, and academic contributors, the edition highlights the discipline, collaboration, and innovation required to drive meaningful progress toward this goal.
Feature articles examine key themes including modernization of financial systems, strengthening internal controls, improving data integrity, and leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence to streamline audit processes. Contributors also address the importance of enterprise-wide alignment, workforce development, and leadership accountability in advancing audit success across the Department.
This issue also presents insights on resource management in complex fiscal environments, the evolving dynamics of financial operations such as foreign military sales, and the critical role of resilience and strategic leadership in navigating an increasingly complex defense landscape.
For questions about these topics and article submission, please contact Armed Forces Comptroller journal Executive Editor Mike Monson.
