Professional Development Institute

What is PDI?

The National Professional Development Institute (PDI) is SDFM’s premier training event that takes place in a different city around the country each year to enhance knowledge and skills for financial managers in the Department of Defense, US Coast Guard, and public and private sectors, and share best practices toward meeting the complex challenges of today’s fiscal environment. The PDI is aligned with the five strategic goals of the DoD FM Strategy.

More than 7,000 defense financial managers converge annually with high-level speakers and instructors for this three-day in person and virtual event to focus on education and training, with more than 120 educational sessions and speakers, and the ability to earn up to 180 continuing professional education (CPE) units.

PDI features a full day of Service and Defense Agencies workshops; general sessions with keynote speakers; mini-courses aligned to the DoD Financial Management Certification Program competencies and associated proficiency levels; financial management, audit, acquisition, and workforce management workshops; and other special activities. SDFM is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accounting (NASBA) standards to obtain and maintain certifications.

Break out sessions include subjects such as auditing, budgeting, accounting, execution, cost management, pay, financial systems, data analytics, organizational performance, leadership, and ethics.

PDI offers more than enough CPEs to recertify for CDFM and DFMCP Certifications. CPEs include in person/on-site sessions, virtually live-streamed sessions through the platform, and recorded session content post PDI.
