Our industry moves quickly and is constantly evolving. SDFM, with the assistance of the Department of Defense, has created a variety of ways for defense financial managers to receive valuable professional training. Participants have the opportunity to earn CPEs and grow skills in person and virtually.
The DoD Authorization Act FY2012 empowers the Secretary of Defense to “… prescribe professional certification and credential standards” for the defense financial management community. The CDFM is one of the DoD-approved Test-Based Certifications recommended for Certification Levels 2 and 3 of the DoD FM Certification Program and most SDFM training offerings align with the DoD FM Strategy.

Professional Development Institute (PDI)
PDI is the premier training event for resource/financial managers in the DoD, US Coast Guard, and public and private sectors. This three-day training event features a full day of Service and Defense Agencies workshops; six general sessions with keynote speakers; 17 mini courses aligned to the DoD Financial Management Certification Program competencies and associated proficiency levels; more than fifty financial management, audit, acquisition, and workforce management workshops; and other special activities.
Program/Budget Summit (P/BS)
To bring together the military and civilian sectors, SDFM designed this new event as a forum to discuss and share defense program and budget priorities. The event provides a forum for the Department of Defense and military personnel to highlight their operational program and budget priorities for the years ahead.
Data Analytics & Decision Support Virtual Conference (DA/DS)
Government and corporate leaders in the field of defense financial management convene at SDFM’s Data Analytics & Decision Support (DA/DS) Virtual Conference to share insight in data analytics and the decision process in the age of generative AI. Discussions include how the comptroller/CFO/financial manager obtains and best uses their “seat at the table.” Attendees learn about priorities concerning the management of enterprise level data including governance, integrity, and relevance toward facilitating transformation and operational excellence.
Training Courses
SDFM partners with top instructors to offer training courses tailored to DoD financial managers year-round and worldwide. CDFM and CDFM-A candidates may find these courses to be very helpful when preparing to take the CDFM exams.
Leadership Courses
SDFM members benefit from receiving education in learning how to make better strategic financial decisions, building strategic partnerships with key stakeholders, and developing a more effective leadership style.
Webinars
SDFM offers webinars in defense financial management, leadership and teamwork, and personal development. Webinars are offered as 1-hour sessions with registration open to both members and non-members alike.
