Director Fundamentals Program: From Financial Leadership to the Boardroom
October 19, 2026 – February 28, 2027
If corporate board service is something you are considering, your defense financial management experience may be more relevant than you realize. Your work may have included overseeing complex budgets, strengthening financial controls, managing risk, supporting acquisition decisions or ensuring responsible use of resources. Those responsibilities can prepare you to contribute to board discussions involving financial oversight, audit, risk, strategy and organizational performance.
The Society of Defense Financial Management (SDFM) has partnered with Corporate Board Member to offer an exclusive Director Fundamentals Program cohort for SDFM members and defense financial management executives.
Space is limited to 12 participants.
Through the program, you’ll work toward:
- A stronger understanding of director responsibilities and how board oversight differs from management
- A clearer explanation of the value your experience could bring to a board
- Greater familiarity with governance, financial reporting, enterprise risk and other board responsibilities
- A more focused board resume, professional biography and LinkedIn profile
- A better-informed plan for identifying and pursuing the right board opportunities
You’ll complete the program alongside other SDFM members and take part in dedicated cohort sessions with financial management leaders who have transitioned to board service. You’ll also receive personalized feedback on your board resume and earn the Director Qualified credential from Corporate Board Member.
Who is this cohort for?
- CFOs, comptrollers and senior financial executives
- Audit, accounting and financial reporting leaders
- Acquisition and resource management executives
- Risk, controls and compliance leaders
- Data analytics and decision-support executives
- Retired or transitioning military and civilian leaders
