Why CDFM?

The CDFM was designed to professionalize and elevate the defense financial management workforce by:
• Establishing a rigorous standard of knowledge and ethics
• Encouraging continuous learning and improvement
• Enhancing cross-functional understanding across the DoD
• Promoting transparency, stewardship, and strategic thinking

The CDFM certification requires passing three core modules:

  1. Resource Management Environment
    • DoD structure, financial responsibilities, and strategy alignment
  2. Budget and Cost Analysis
    • Budgeting process, cost analysis, and performance metrics
  3. Accounting and Finance
    • Federal accounting concepts, internal controls, and audit readiness

Candidates may optionally take a fourth module (see CDFM Specialty), but only Modules 1–3 are required for the base certification.
