The credential is designed for professionals supporting the complex, mission-critical work of the MHS and reflects the specialized knowledge needed to manage resources, strengthen controls, support readiness, and provide disciplined financial leadership.

The CDFM-H exam is organized across four key domains: 

  • Strategic Planning – 20%: Strategy-to-budget alignment, appropriations logic, resource planning, and mission readiness. 
  • Management Controls – 34%: Internal controls, compliance, documentation, monitoring, and risk mitigation.  
  • Operational Tasks & Controls – 34%: Execution pacing, variance analysis, productivity oversight, forecasting, and operational response.  
  • CFO Leadership & Governance – 12%: Ethical leadership, advisory judgment, governance integrity, and strategic financial stewardship. 

Together, these domains reflect the responsibilities of financial professionals operating in defense healthcare settings, from medical treatment facilities to enterprise-level oversight. The exam is scenario-based and decision-oriented, requiring candidates to interpret information, apply judgment, and select the most appropriate action in context.

To be awarded the CDFM-H specialty certification, a candidate must:

• Already be CDFM certified which requires passing CDFM exam modules 1-3
• Successfully pass the CDFM-H Exam Module 5

  • Download and carefully review the Candidate Handbook, including the exam blueprints in the appendix. 

Exams can be taken online with remote proctoring or at Pearson VUE testing centers on and off military bases, worldwide. The Module 5 Healthcare Exam is a two-hour exam with 90 multiple-choice questions (80 questions are scored, 10 questions are unscored).

  • Complete 80 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours every two years, including 2 ethics CPEs. (If you are already CDFM certified, your CDFM-A/CDFM-H  recertification cycle will align with your existing CDFM cycle.) 
  • Submit documentation to maintain active status.

The CDFM-H is a healthcare specialty designation within the broader CDFM certification ecosystem. It builds on the foundational competencies of the CDFM and sits alongside CDFM and CDFM-A as part of SDFM’s certification portfolio.

Eligible candidates can apply for the CDFM-H through their SDFM account. Click “My SDFM,” select “My Certification,” then click “Apply for CDFM-H.”

The application fee is $49 for members and $89 for nonmembers. The CDFM-H exam fee is $119. Both fees must be paid together to be actively enrolled in the specialty certification.

There are 90 exam questions on the CDFM-H exam, of which only 80 questions will be scored. The 10 additional questions are pretest questions and unscored and will not be identified on the exam.
