What is PDI?

The national Professional Development Institute (PDI) is SDFM’s premier training event, held annually in various cities across the country. It aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of financial managers in the Department of Defense, US Coast Guard, and both public and private sectors. PDI fosters the sharing of best practices to address the complex challenges of today’s fiscal environment and aligns with the five strategic goals of the DoD FM Strategy.

Each year, more than 7,000 defense financial managers gather for this three-day event, which includes both in-person and virtual participation. The event features over 120 educational sessions and speakers, providing attendees the opportunity to earn up to 180 continuing professional education (CPE) units.

Key Features of PDI:

  • Sessions: A full day dedicated to Service and Defense Agencies sessions, general sessions with keynote speakers, mini-courses aligned with DoD Financial Management Certification Program competencies, and specialized sessions in financial management, audit, acquisition, and workforce management.
  • Diverse Topics: Breakout sessions cover a wide range of subjects, including auditing, budgeting, accounting, execution, cost management, pay, financial systems, data analytics, organizational performance, leadership, and ethics.

CPE Opportunities: PDI provides ample CPEs to meet recertification requirements for CDFM and DFMCP certifications. These include in-person/on-site sessions, live-streamed virtual sessions, and recorded content available post-event. SDFM is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accounting (NASBA) standards to obtain and maintain certifications.
