Across the Department of War, leaders are under increasing pressure to demonstrate sound financial stewardship, maximize constrained resources, and ensure auditability across complex mission portfolios. Yet—as in the private sector—many risk management and internal audit functions struggle to move beyond compliance-driven routines. Too often, they generate static reports that satisfy oversight requirements but do not provide the timely, data-driven insight needed to guide resource allocation, strengthen controls, or support mission-critical decisions. The missing element is meaningful risk analytics that can convert dispersed financial, operational, and audit data into information for leaders to make sound and timely decisions.

This session, Harnessing Risk Analytics for Audit and Decision Support, explores how the Department of War and other federal agencies can apply analytics to enhance internal audit, modernize oversight, and improve financial integrity. Participants will see how analytics can identify emerging risks earlier, highlight anomalies that may affect budget execution or contracting outcomes, and continuously monitor high-value areas such as cybersecurity, logistics, workforce readiness, and financial reporting. Real examples and case studies will demonstrate how modern analytics turns audit results and risk indicators into practical guidance for leaders responsible for resource decisions and operational performance.

The session will also introduce an analytics maturity curve tailored to helping organizations assess their current capabilities and chart a path toward continuous monitoring, automated controls testing, and real-time decision support. Attendees will leave with concrete approaches for integrating analytics into risk, audit, and financial stewardship functions—strengthening accountability, improving auditability, and enhancing mission readiness through better-informed decisions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the role of risk analytics in decision-making: Learn how analytics transforms audit and risk management from compliance activities into tools that directly support mission outcomes.
  • Apply analytics to audit and oversight functions: Explore practical techniques for using analytics to detect issues earlier, strengthen assurance, and provide leaders with curated, actionable insights.
  • Advance along the analytics maturity curve: Identify where your organization currently stands in its use of analytics for risk and decision support, and outline practical next steps for integrating analytics into DoD operations, resource allocation, and strategic planning.
